Finding Your Circle: How Healing Circles Create Safe Spaces for Black and Latina Women

Let’s cut the shit for a moment: carrying the weight of the world is exhausting.

For many Black and Latina women, the "Strong Woman" narrative isn't a badge of honor; it’s a cage. We are taught to be the anchors of our families, the backbone of our communities, and the tireless workers in our careers: often at the expense of our own peace. We navigate systemic barriers, microaggressions, and intergenerational trauma, all while being told to "just keep going."

But what happens when you’re tired of just surviving? Where do you go when you need a place to set the heavy bags down without being judged, misunderstood, or pathologized?

At Daughters of Both Suns, we believe that you do not have to earn rest. You do not have to heal in isolation. This is where Healing Circles come in: a sanctuary designed by us, for us.

What is a Healing Circle?

A Healing Circle is more than just a support group. It is a facilitated, peer-led space where community members gather to share their stories, witness one another’s journeys, and find collective strength. Unlike traditional, clinical settings that can sometimes feel cold or hierarchical, our Healing Circles are rooted in equity and shared lived experience.

In these circles, we move away from "fixing" and toward "being." There is no pressure to have it all figured out. Instead, we lean into a non-hierarchical structure where every voice matters. It’s about inclusive mental health care that honors the traditions we’ve inherited while building new, healthier legacies.

Why Culturally Responsive Care Matters

For many BIPOC women, entering a therapist's office can feel like entering a foreign land. If the person across from you doesn't understand the nuances of your culture, the weight of your family expectations, or the reality of racialized stress, the healing process is stunted.

Culturally responsive therapy and support are not "extras": they are essential.

Healing circles provide a space where you don’t have to explain your identity before you explain your pain. Whether we are discussing the complexities of being a first-generation daughter or the unique challenges of maternal health, our circles are grounded in trauma-informed care for women of color. We understand that our trauma is often tied to systems, not just personal choices.

By centering our specific needs, we move from surviving the system to building our own. If you're looking for more individualized support alongside community, our BridgeCare Therapy Navigation is here to connect you with therapists who truly "get it."

The Power of the "Me Too" Moment

There is a visceral, physical release that happens when you speak a truth you thought you were alone in, and three other women nod their heads and say, "Me too."

Isolation is one of the biggest drivers of mental health struggles. In our Healing Circles, we break that isolation. We use "resilient metaphors" to describe our growth: we don't break; we bend. And sometimes, we just sit in the stillness together.

These spaces offer:

  • A Safe Haven: A place to express anger, grief, and joy without the "angry woman" or "emotional woman" stereotypes.

  • Empowerment: Tools for setting boundaries and prioritizing self-care without guilt. ✨

  • Community Connection: Building a network of "fictive kin" who support you beyond the meeting.

  • Bilingual Support: We honor our roots by offering spaces where you can speak your truth in English or Spanish.

Healing the Legacies We Carry

We often think of healing as an individual task: something we do for ourselves. But at Daughters of Both Suns, we know that personal healing is the catalyst for community change. When you heal, you change the way you parent, the way you lead, and the way you show up for your sisters.

We are literally "healing the legacies we carry." By addressing BIPOC mental health through a communal lens, we are breaking cycles of silence that have lasted for generations. We are moving from a state of constant high alert to a state of grounded presence.

You Don’t Have to Walk Alone

If you’ve been feeling like you’re pouring from an empty cup, this is your invitation to refill. Whether you are in Myrtle Beach or joining us virtually from across the country, there is a seat for you at the table.

We offer:

  1. Virtual Healing Circles: Safe spaces you can access from the comfort of your own home.

  2. Community Wellness Programs: Workshops and webinars focused on everything from autism advocacy to trauma recovery.

  3. Crisis Support: If you’re in a moment where the circle feels too far away, you can access confidential support through our Crisis Text Line partnership.

Healing is not a destination; it is a journey. And while the path might be gritty and difficult at times, it is infinitely easier when you have a circle of women walking beside you, holding the light.
