September provides a new opportunity for a fresh start. The change in season reminds us to pause and take a closer look at our own habits, routines, and the way we care for ourselves and others. This month invites us to check in with our own balance.
At Daughters of Both Suns, September is an important month. It is Suicide Prevention Month, Self-Care Awareness Month, and the start of Hispanic Heritage Month. Each of these observances connects deeply to our mission of creating trauma-informed, culturally grounded spaces where Black and Latina women can heal and thrive.
As the days grow shorter and the air takes on a crisp edge, fall also gives us a chance to slow down and ground ourselves. Simple seasonal activities can become powerful forms of stress management and self-care. Something as small as setting aside an afternoon for creativity or nourishment can help restore balance and bring a sense of calm.

DIY arts and crafts, like making a fall-inspired wreath with dried leaves and flowers, or creating a gratitude journal with warm autumn colors, can serve as mindful practices. Other cozy projects might include hand-painting pumpkins with affirmations, pressing colorful leaves to use as bookmarks, or assembling a vision board with fall tones to set gentle intentions for the season. Each of these activities is less about the finished product and more about the calming process of creating something with your own hands.Working with your hands allows you to quiet your thoughts and release stress, while surrounding yourself with symbols of the season brings a feeling of comfort and renewal.
Cooking can also become a form of healing. Trying out easy fall recipes, such as roasted butternut squash soup or homemade apple crisps, nourishes not only the body but also the spirit. You might also experiment with spiced teas, baked pumpkin bread, or a simple sheet pan of roasted root vegetables drizzled with olive oil and herbs. These recipes are grounding, warm, and fragrant; reminders to slow down and savor the moment. Sharing these meals with loved ones, or simply enjoying them on your own, becomes an act of care that honors both connection and rest.

Most importantly, September reminds us of the value of āme time.ā In the business of our schedules, giving yourself permission to step back, breathe, and enjoy a quiet moment can be transformative. Whether itās a warm cup of tea, a walk under falling leaves, or ten minutes of journaling, making time for yourself is not selfish; itās necessary.
This season, letās embrace both creativity and rest. Healing often begins with the smallest choices we make to honor ourselves. And when we prioritize our own care, we create more space to show up for one another with compassion and strength. September invites us to release what no longer serves us and make room for growth. Every act of self-care, whether big or small, ripples outward; helping to build communities rooted in love, resilience, and renewal. This fall, letās choose to slow down, create with intention, nourish our bodies, and hold space for joy. In doing so, we honor not only our own well-being but also the collective healing that connects us all.
