August Community Events: Back-to-School Bash, Pelicans Fundraiser & More

August is rolling in with a unique blend of transition, anticipation, and grit. For many of us in the community, this month marks a shifting of gears. The lazy, sun-drenched days of summer give way to the crisp urgency of a new school year, organizational planning, and the quiet internal reflection that comes with changing seasons.

At Daughters of Both Suns, we know that transitions can stir up a lot. Whether you are navigating the heavy mental load of parenting, trying to catch your breath after months of burnout, or simply looking for spaces where you can exhale without having to explain yourself, you do not have to carry it all alone. Healing isn't just an individual pursuit; it is something we build together from the ground up.

As we step into August, we have curated a lineup of events designed to bring our community closer, lighten the load, and center our collective well-being. From family celebrations to baseball fun and deep emotional grounding, here is everything happening this month at Daughters of Both Suns. Come as you are. There is a seat reserved just for you.

1. Inclusive Back-to-School Bash

Saturday, August 1 | 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM Location: STAR Academy, 151 Prather Park Drive, Myrtle Beach, SC Sponsored by Passanante's Home Food Service

Let’s cut through the noise: getting children ready for a new school year can be financially draining and emotionally exhausting, especially for families navigating sensory needs, autism, or developmental differences. Too often, parents feel isolated trying to access the right accommodations and resources.

That is why we are kicking off August with our Inclusive Back-to-School Bash! Designed specifically to support children with autism, disabilities, and sensory needs: while welcoming all local families: this free community event is all about setting our kids up for success while wrapping parents in support.

2. Home Runs for Hope: Myrtle Beach Pelicans Fundraiser

Saturday, August 15 | Gates open at 6:00 PM, Game starts at 7:05 PM Location: Myrtle Beach Pelicans Ballpark, 1251 21st Avenue North, Myrtle Beach, SC

Summer nights and ballpark lights: is there anything quite like it? On Saturday, August 15, we are taking over the stands for Home Runs for Hope, a special fundraising night with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans benefiting Daughters of Both Suns!

This isn't just a night out at the ballpark; it's a powerful statement about community investment and sustaining mental health equity. Every ticket purchased directly supports our ongoing mission to expand access to culturally responsive therapy, financial assistance through our Sanar Therapy Fund, and vital wellness programs for women of color in our region.

We talk a lot about moving from survival to systems, and sustainability is a core part of that work. When you join us at the ballpark, you are directly funding safe spaces, professional support, and barrier-breaking resources for Black and Latina women and families who deserve affirming care. Bring your friends, wear your team colors, and let’s cheer loud for hope!

3. Healing What History Left Behind: Virtual Community Gathering

Thursday, August 27 | 6:30 PM Location: Virtual / Online

What ghosts are we carrying in our nervous systems that don't even belong to us? Intergenerational trauma, ancestral resilience, and the unspoken weights passed down through generations shape how we love, work, and survive.

On Thursday, August 27, we invite you to our monthly virtual healing circle, Healing What History Left Behind. Rooted in our commitment to BIPOC mental health and trauma-informed care, this intimate virtual gathering explores the intersection of history, identity, and personal reclamation.

An empowered community member representing trauma-informed care and BIPOC mental health support

Facilitated by compassionate leaders, this session offers a gentle space to unpack burnout, dismantle perfectionism, and reclaim your peace. We will explore how community education mental health tools can help us rewrite the scripts handed down by our environments. You do not have to earn rest, and you certainly don't have to heal in isolation.

🌸 Join a Healing Circle and save your spot for this restorative evening.

Why Culturally Responsive Care Matters More Than Ever

As we look across our August calendar: from the playground laughter at our Back-to-School Bash to the roar of the crowd at the Pelicans game and the quiet depth of our Healing Circle: the underlying thread is clear: connection is medicine.

For Black and Latina women, seeking mental health support often means navigating systems that were not built with our lived experiences in mind. Microaggressions in clinical settings, financial barriers, and cultural stigma can make asking for help feel like an uphill battle. At Daughters of Both Suns, we are dismantling these barriers one program, one referral, and one conversation at a time.

Through our BridgeCare Therapy Navigation, we match individuals with practitioners who look like them, understand their cultural context, and practice true trauma-informed care. Because healing shouldn't require you to translate your pain.

Get Involved and Stay Connected

We cannot do this vital work without you. Whether you choose to volunteer at our August 1st Back-to-School Bash, purchase a ticket to the Pelicans game on August 15th, or drop into our virtual circle on August 27th, your presence matters.
